We have the resources to provide top-notch care for our students

AAC & AT

Technology at SLDC is a critical element in helping our students learn and communicate. The assistive technology and augmentative and alternative communication technology (AT and AAC) hardware, software, and devices are accessed by our students on a daily basis. AAC devices are available for students that require them. Examples of some of the technology available include: Smartboards in each classroom, ipads, technology lab computers, touch enabled tablets, smart table along with many other devices (eye gaze, switch enabled etc.)

Speech-Language Pathology

SLP services comprise of professionals concerned with evaluation, treatment, and research in communication disorders. Currently, SLDC has multiple Speech-Language Pathologists on staff as well as Speech-Language Pathologist Assistants. They treat speech and language disorders and work with individuals of all ages. Our team evaluates speech problems, such as fluency (stuttering), articulation, voice disorders as well as language problems, such as aphasia and delayed language and related disorders. Our team is focused on finding the right communication tool for each child, including the use of picture symbols, sign language, and communication devices.

Occupational Therapy

Our OT Department utilizes various treatment practices to assist students with physical, developmental, mental, or emotional disabilities. These treatments aid in the improvement of skills that help them perform tasks that are vital to their day-to-day lives. Currently there are trained occupational therapists on staff and also certified occupational therapy assistants. The occupational therapists at SLDC promote independence in the areas of sensory processing, self-regulation, fine and visual motor coordination.

Behavioral Services

Our Behavioral Services department adheres to a consultation model that uses an evidenced-based applied behavioral analysis (ABA) model to organize our delivery of assessment and treatment programming. The model is considered best practice for individuals who display challenging behavior associated with learning difficulties. Behavioral Services uses functional assessment, strategic and contingent reinforcement strategies, antecedent interventions, social skill development interventions, and related positive behavioral strategies that support teachers and therapists in creating a continuous supportive provision of learning opportunities. Outcomes are monitored through ongoing data collection and management. Behavioral Services has well-trained staff, with Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs and BCaBAs), and Registered Behavior Technicians (RBTs).

Counseling

Our Counseling Department currently has Licensed Marriage and Family therapists, a credentialed School Psychologist, and a UCLA Peers Educated Counselor. They work with children and adults individually, in group settings, individual and/or group counseling to help students benefit, as fully as possible, from their academic program. Our Counselors consult and collaborate with staff and families to understand the special needs of a student and understanding the adaptations and modifications needed to assist the student with their social and emotional needs.

Physical Therapy

Our physical therapy program focuses on movement patterns involved with gross motor development in both educational and medical models. PT services are available to clients ages birth through 22 years.

Physical therapy referrals include Regional Centers, private insurance, and school districts. Our therapist employs a range of techniques to improve strength, balance, coordination, and motor planning to assist with safely accessing the educational environment.
